The 3971 is a narrow variant of the 3970 perpetual calendar chronograph, made in the late 1980s and distinguished by one detail: it shipped with a sapphire caseback as standard, at a time when early 3970 examples still used a solid snap-on back. Both references ran the same caliber 27-70Q and were offered in yellow, white and rose gold as well as platinum.
- The 3971 and 3970 share caliber 27-70Q; the only distinction was a standard sapphire caseback on the 3971.

How do I check a Patek Philippe 3971 with Watch Safe?
Look up the watch's serial number in the Watch Safe registry to see whether a record exists or a theft flag is attached. A registry search identifies records for a specific serial; it does not authenticate the watch. Authentication is performed in person by an independent expert authenticator, and Watch Safe records and publishes the result.
