Reference 3940 replaced Patek Philippe's earlier perpetual calendars with a wristwatch under 9mm thick, driven by an automatic micro-rotor movement, the Caliber 240 Q, at a time when a self-winding ultra-thin perpetual calendar was a genuine engineering problem. The 3940J-001 is the yellow gold execution and the metal of the reference's first series, roughly 700 pieces made between 1985 and 1987 before white gold, rose gold and platinum versions followed.

Look up the watch's serial number in the Watch Safe registry to see whether a record exists or a theft flag is attached. A registry search identifies records for a specific serial; it does not authenticate the watch. Authentication is performed in person by an independent expert authenticator, and Watch Safe records and publishes the result.
