The perpetual calendar chronograph that followed the 2499, and the reference that carried the complication through the quartz era into the modern collector market. Like its predecessor it runs a chronograph movement bought in from Lemania and finished in-house — Patek would not build its own until the 5270 succeeded this line. It ran for eighteen years across four series, which is why two 3970s can differ in caseback, hallmark and dial detail while sharing a reference.
