Gérald Genta designed it in 1976 after the Royal Oak, taking the shape from a ship's porthole and its locking hinges. Patek's original advertising — one of the world's costliest watches is made of steel — was a deliberate provocation. Fifty years later the Nautilus is the most valuable steel sports watch line in the industry, and Patek discontinued its flagship reference at peak demand rather than let one model define the house.
