The Portugieser began in the late 1930s when two Portuguese retailers asked IWC for a wristwatch with marine-chronometer accuracy. The only way to get there was to case a large pocket-watch movement, which is why the Portugieser has always been oversized and why its proportions look nothing like a shrunken dress watch.

Look up the watch's serial number in the Watch Safe registry to see whether a record exists or a theft flag is attached. A registry search identifies records for a specific serial; it does not authenticate the watch. Authentication is performed in person by an independent expert authenticator, and Watch Safe records and publishes the result.
