An American watchmaker, Florentine Ariosto Jones, founded the International Watch Company in Schaffhausen in 1868 — the idea being to combine Swiss handcraft with American industrial methods, and to use the Rhine for power. It is the only major Swiss manufacturer in the German-speaking east of the country. Its engineering reputation rests on the Ingenieur's soft-iron antimagnetic cage and the oversized pilot's watches.
