Two Portuguese retailers asked IWC in the late 1930s for a wristwatch with marine-chronometer accuracy. The only movements precise enough were pocket-watch calibres, so IWC cased one — which is why the Portugieser has always been large, and why its proportions read as deliberate rather than inflated.
