Jules Louis Audemars and Edward Auguste Piguet founded the firm in the Vallée de Joux in 1875, and it has never left family control. For its first century it was a maker of complicated movements sold largely to other houses. Then in 1972 it launched the Royal Oak, a steel watch priced above gold ones, and the identity of the company changed permanently.
