The reference that introduced the hands. Tudor squared off the hour hand into an angular block — the snowflake — and squared the hour markers to match, which sounds like styling and was not: a broader hand carries more luminous material, and a shape that differs sharply from the minute hand is faster to read wrong-way-up in dark water. Tudor was supplying the French Marine Nationale at the time, and the design reflects what a navy asks for.
