The first Submariner with crown guards, and the first rated as a chronometer — which is why 5512 dials carry the extra two lines of certification text that 5513 dials do not. Its case shape is essentially the one Rolex still sells today.
- Early crown guards were pointed, then squared, then rounded — collectors sort them into 'cornino', 'eagle beak' and the final rounded form.
- A four-line dial (with chronometer certification text) is correct for the 5512; the two-line dial belongs to the 5513.
