The 1921 original was made for the American market and built around a problem: a driver with both hands on the wheel cannot read a watch on his wrist without taking a hand off it. So the dial is rotated and the crown sits at the upper right, which puts twelve o'clock where the driver's eye already is. The cushion case follows from the same brief.
- The rotated dial and off-axis crown are a driving watch's ergonomics, not a decorative asymmetry.
- The crown's position at the upper right rather than at three is the defining structural feature of the reference.
