The Chronomat has been two different watches. The first, from 1942, was built on the circular slide rule Breitling patented in 1940 — chronograph plus mathematics, aimed at engineers rather than pilots, and the direct ancestor of the Navitimer. The second, from 1984, was developed with the Frecce Tricolori, the Italian air force's display team, and is widely credited with carrying Breitling back out of the quartz crisis. The rider tabs on its bezel are gripped with gloved hands.
