Gérald Genta sketched it overnight for a 1972 Basel deadline. A steel watch priced above gold ones was considered commercially insane at the time, and AP built only 1,000 of the first A-series to spread the risk. It saved the company and invented the luxury sports watch category outright.
Key dates.
- Launched at Basel as the first luxury steel sports watch
- The exposed hexagonal bezel screws are functional, aligned by hand, and pass through to the caseback.
- The first 1,000 pieces carry 'A' series numbers, which is where the collector shorthand comes from.

How do I check a Audemars Piguet 5402ST with Watch Safe?
Look up the watch's serial number in the Watch Safe registry to see whether a record exists or a theft flag is attached. A registry search identifies records for a specific serial; it does not authenticate the watch. Authentication is performed in person by an independent expert authenticator, and Watch Safe records and publishes the result.
