Ferdinand Adolph Lange founded the firm in Glashütte, Saxony, in 1845 and effectively built the German watchmaking industry around it. The company was expropriated by the East German state in 1948 and ceased to exist for four decades. Walter Lange, the founder's great-grandson, refounded it in 1990 after reunification and launched the first new collection in October 1994. Its movements are assembled twice — built, disassembled, finished, then rebuilt — which is why the finishing on parts nobody sees is at the level it is.
