The El Primero calibre 400 in modern production, still beating 36,000 times an hour, the rate that let the 1969 original resolve a tenth of a second. Zenith came close to losing this movement altogether. During the quartz years the tooling was ordered destroyed, and a watchmaker at the factory hid the presses and the plans in an attic instead.
- The calibre survives because Charles Vermot concealed its tooling rather than scrapping it when Zenith moved to quartz.
