Named after a substance. Panerai patented Radiomir in 1916, a radium-based luminous compound, and supplied instruments and dials to the Italian Regia Marina — the watches came later and were built for frogmen who needed to read a dial in the dark under water. The cushion case and wire lugs are the original 1930s solution to strapping a large watch over a diving suit.
