Giovanni Panerai opened a Florence workshop in 1860, but the company's identity comes from its decades as a supplier to the Royal Italian Navy's frogman units. Those watches were classified military equipment, built around legibility in dark water — the cushion case, the sandwich dial, the crown-protecting bridge. Panerai did not sell to the public until 1993, and Richemont acquired it in 1997.
