Breitling · Navitimer
Known in the trade as the Cosmonaute.
Scott Carpenter asked Breitling for a Navitimer with a 24-hour dial, for a specific reason: in orbit he would see a sunrise roughly every ninety minutes, and a 12-hour dial would tell him nothing about whether it was morning or evening on the ground. He wore it aboard Aurora 7 on 24 May 1962, which made it the first Swiss wristwatch worn in space — several years before the Speedmaster was qualified by NASA.
The 809 was produced from 1962 to 1965.
The Breitling 809 runs the Venus 178 (24-hour mod), a manual movement.
