Beat Rate
The frequency of a mechanical movement's balance wheel, stated in vibrations per hour, commonly 18,000 to 36,000 vph, which determines how smoothly the seconds hand sweeps.

Every caliber has a documented beat rate, and a timing machine reads the actual rate in seconds, making this one of the fastest movement-identity checks available. A seconds hand that ticks once per second on a watch sold as automatic indicates a quartz movement inside. A sweep that stutters at visibly the wrong rhythm for the claimed caliber invites opening the caseback.
