Urwerk does not use hands. Its watches tell the time with satellites — rotating carriers that carry hour numerals along a track past a fixed minute scale — an idea taken from the wandering-hours night clock made for Pope Alexander VII in the seventeenth century. The name comes from Ur, the Mesopotamian city where the earliest known timekeeping was recorded, and Werk, German for work.
