Two inventions in one name. The Oyster case of 1926 was the first genuinely waterproof wristwatch case, sealed by screwing the caseback, bezel and winding crown against the middle case. The Perpetual rotor of 1931 was the free-rotating self-winding mechanism that almost every automatic watch since has copied. Everything else Rolex makes is built on those two things, which is why the plainest watches in the catalogue carry the name.
