It descends from the Memovox Polaris of 1968, a dive watch with a mechanical alarm — an unlikely combination that made sense before dive computers, because an alarm you can feel underwater tells you when to begin your ascent. That watch had three crowns: one to wind, one to set the alarm, one to turn an internal rotating bezel. The modern Polaris keeps the layout even where it no longer keeps the alarm.
