Founded as a Paris jeweller in 1847, Cartier's contribution to watchmaking is shape. While Swiss houses refined the round watch, Cartier made the Santos in 1904, the Tonneau in 1906, the Tortue in 1912 and the Tank in 1917 — a body of work that established the wristwatch as an object of design rather than only of engineering. Edward VII's description of Cartier as jeweller to kings and king of jewellers is the line the house has traded on ever since.
