The Fifty Fathoms line began in 1953, developed with French Navy combat divers who needed a watch with a lockable rotating bezel so it could not be knocked to a shorter reading underwater. It predates the Submariner and has a strong claim to being the first modern dive watch.
Key dates.
- Developed for French Navy combat swimmers
- The locking bezel exists so an accidental knock cannot make a diver overstay their air.
