Rolex
serial decoder.

Check a Rolex serial against publicly documented production windows. The result is a dating reference, never an authenticity verdict.

This compares the serial's format with documented production eras only. It does not check or authenticate a watch.

Your entry never leaves this browser

The decoder reads production eras. The registry records authentication, ownership, and theft status.

How to read the result

One clue, properly framed.

Rolex encodes two different things in the numbers stamped on a watch: the reference number identifies the model, and the serial number identifies the individual watch and, for anything made before the switch to randomized serials, roughly when it left the factory. Rolex has never published a serial-to-year chart itself, so every version in circulation, including the one below, is reconstructed by cross-referencing production runs and case-back date stamps that collectors have documented over decades. Treat it as a well-informed estimate, not a certificate.

A Rolex serial number identifies an individual watch and, for anything made before 2010, indicates roughly when it was made. It does not authenticate a watch: a serial that falls in the right range shows only that such a number was issued, not that the watch in front of you is the one it was issued to.

1964–19691964–1969Cross-referenced across multiple independent published Rolex serial-dating charts and collector/dealer references, none treated as sole authority. Rolex has never published this data itself; the independent charts differ from each other by one to three years at most boundaries, which is why this table uses multi-year bands instead of false single-year precision.
1970–19751970–1975Cross-referenced across multiple independent published Rolex serial-dating charts and collector/dealer references, none treated as sole authority. Rolex has never published this data itself; the independent charts differ from each other by one to three years at most boundaries, which is why this table uses multi-year bands instead of false single-year precision.
1976–19801976–1980Cross-referenced across multiple independent published Rolex serial-dating charts and collector/dealer references, none treated as sole authority. Rolex has never published this data itself; the independent charts differ from each other by one to three years at most boundaries, which is why this table uses multi-year bands instead of false single-year precision.
1981–19851981–1985Cross-referenced across multiple independent published Rolex serial-dating charts and collector/dealer references, none treated as sole authority. Rolex has never published this data itself; the independent charts differ from each other by one to three years at most boundaries, which is why this table uses multi-year bands instead of false single-year precision.
1986–1987 (pre-letter)1986–1987Cross-referenced across multiple independent published Rolex serial-dating charts and collector/dealer references, none treated as sole authority. Rolex has never published this data itself; the independent charts differ from each other by one to three years at most boundaries, which is why this table uses multi-year bands instead of false single-year precision. Rolex moved to a letter-prefix serial in mid-1987, so the top of this numeric band is soft.
Prefix R, L, E, X1987–1990In 1987 Rolex began prefixing the serial with a single letter, starting with R, L, E, X — spelling ROLEX without the O. Cross-referenced across multiple independent published Rolex serial-dating charts and collector/dealer references, none treated as sole authority. Rolex has never published this data itself; the independent charts differ from each other by one to three years at most boundaries, which is why this table uses multi-year bands instead of false single-year precision.
Prefix N, C, S1991–1994N, C and S are consistently reported as arriving in the early-to-mid 1990s.
Prefix W, T, U1995–1997Cross-referenced across multiple independent published Rolex serial-dating charts and collector/dealer references, none treated as sole authority. Rolex has never published this data itself; the independent charts differ from each other by one to three years at most boundaries, which is why this table uses multi-year bands instead of false single-year precision.
Prefix A, P1998–2000Cross-referenced across multiple independent published Rolex serial-dating charts and collector/dealer references, none treated as sole authority. Rolex has never published this data itself; the independent charts differ from each other by one to three years at most boundaries, which is why this table uses multi-year bands instead of false single-year precision.
Prefix K, Y2000–2003Cross-referenced across multiple independent published Rolex serial-dating charts and collector/dealer references, none treated as sole authority. Rolex has never published this data itself; the independent charts differ from each other by one to three years at most boundaries, which is why this table uses multi-year bands instead of false single-year precision.
Prefix F, D2003–2006Cross-referenced across multiple independent published Rolex serial-dating charts and collector/dealer references, none treated as sole authority. Rolex has never published this data itself; the independent charts differ from each other by one to three years at most boundaries, which is why this table uses multi-year bands instead of false single-year precision.
Prefix Z, M2006–2008Cross-referenced across multiple independent published Rolex serial-dating charts and collector/dealer references, none treated as sole authority. Rolex has never published this data itself; the independent charts differ from each other by one to three years at most boundaries, which is why this table uses multi-year bands instead of false single-year precision.
Prefix V2008–2010Cross-referenced across multiple independent published Rolex serial-dating charts and collector/dealer references, none treated as sole authority. Rolex has never published this data itself; the independent charts differ from each other by one to three years at most boundaries, which is why this table uses multi-year bands instead of false single-year precision. V is the last letter prefix before the mid-2011 switch to fully randomized serials.
Everything after the documented eras aboveNot datableStarting in mid-2011 Rolex switched to fully randomized alphanumeric serials that carry no year information at all, confirmed across every major dealer/collector reference. A serial from this era cannot be dated by Watch Safe, or by anyone outside Rolex.
Common questions

Before you rely on a number.

01

Where is the serial number on a Rolex?

Between the lugs at the 6 o'clock position on watches made before roughly 2005, which means removing the bracelet to see it. Rolex started repeating the serial on the rehaut, the inner bezel ring, from about 2005 onward, so on newer watches it is visible without taking anything apart.

02

Can I date my Rolex from its serial number?

For anything made from 1964 through 2010, yes, approximately: Rolex's serial sequence and later letter-prefix system are documented well enough to place a watch within a multi-year band. From mid-2011 onward Rolex switched to fully randomized serials with no year encoding, so a serial from that era cannot be dated at all, by this tool or anyone outside Rolex.

03

Does a matching serial number prove my Rolex is genuine?

No. A serial number identifies an individual watch and, for older watches, roughly when it was made. It does not authenticate anything: a serial in the right range shows only that Rolex issued a number like it, not that the watch in front of you is the genuine article it claims to be. That is a physical inspection question.

04

Does Watch Safe authenticate Rolex watches?

Watch Safe does not authenticate watches itself. An independent expert authenticator in Watch Safe's network physically inspects the watch and certifies it; Watch Safe records that inspection and publishes the permanent registry entry.
