eBay's Authenticity Guarantee routes qualifying watches sold on eBay through a physical inspection before they reach the buyer. It is a well-built program for exactly one context: a watch changing hands on eBay. Watch Safe solves a different problem, a record that exists independent of any marketplace and stays with the watch.

The deepest difference is what survives the transaction. eBay's program inspects the watch on its way from seller to buyer, and what the buyer keeps is an NFC-enabled card tied to that sale. A Watch Safe authentication produces a permanent public registry entry attached to the watch's serial number, which the next buyer, and the one after that, can look up without anyone's permission.
The two also differ on who does the checking and how visibly. eBay's inspection happens inside a program the platform operates for its own marketplace. A Watch Safe record names the independent authenticator who physically inspected the watch and signed the record, and the inspection happens in person rather than in a shipping pipeline.
Finally, scope. The Authenticity Guarantee applies to watches sold on eBay.com within its price bands and geography, and it is genuinely free to both parties at $2,000 and up, which is a real advantage inside that flow. It has no role in a private sale, a forum deal, a dealer purchase off-platform, or a watch you already own and simply want on the record.
Choose eBay Authenticity Guarantee if you are buying or selling a qualifying watch on eBay. The inspection is mandatory above $2,000 anyway, it costs you nothing there, and it is integrated into the sale.
Choose Watch Safe when the watch is not passing through eBay, or when what you want is not a transaction check but a permanent, publicly checkable record of an in-person authentication that stays with the watch for its whole life.
What the buyer keeps is an NFC-enabled card recording the details of that verified sale. eBay's materials do not describe any public registry a future buyer could check. For watches sold on eBay.com at $2,000 or more, eBay covers the cost for both buyer and seller. Between $500 and $1,999.99 it is an optional $80 add-on paid by the buyer. That pricing only exists inside an eBay sale; it is not a service you can send your own watch to.
